The AHS Administration and Counseling Staff hosted a luncheon today in "Cafe College Center" for the Top 10 graduating seniors of the AHS Class of 2008.  The students were served lunch in a room decorated with a "Tigger" theme.  During dessert, the students viewed a reprise of Dr. Randy Pausch's Last Lecture from Carnegie Melon University.  The lecture, given by this professor who is dying of pancreatic cancer, talks about pursuing your childhood dreams and living life with integrity.  One of the themes of the lecture is that we should have "fun" and we have to decide if we are a "Tigger" or an "Eeyore".  Each one of the top ten seniors was given a Tigger stuffed animal and reminded to have fun and live their lives with integrity and accomplish great things.  Dr. Hayes, Superintendent of Schools; Karen McAtee, Director of Secondary Education; and Mike Green, Assist. Superintendent also attended the lunch.

Athens High School Occupational Preparation Class visited Tyler Junior College on Tuesday, April 22, 2008.  Students were given an extensive tour of the campus and ate lunch in the TJC Cafeteria.  After lunch Ms. Gilbert's 10th and 11th grade students enjoyed the Annual International Day Fair hosted by Tyler Junior College.  Students were not only introduced to the many academic opportunities that TJC has to offer but were also given the opportunity to taste foreign foods,  enjoy music and dance performances from many different countries, and meet people from all over the world.
The band earned the U.I.L. "Sweepstakes" award for earning 1st division ratings at Marching, Concert, and Sightreading contest this year.  This is the 2nd consecutive year for this honor. Sr Band

Athens High School students recently participated in a mock exercise conducted by the City of Athens and various other organizations. The students were witnessed to what can happen in a car accident caused by drinking and driving. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the simulation. It is obvious that there is a great deal of commitment to the well-being of all of our young people.

Maggie Mizell and the Athens High School One Act Play team were invited to Ross Perot’s business and museum in the Dallas area. The students were invited because of their production of the play Prisoner by James Bell. The day was spent touring the facility that contains many pieces of American history. At the end of the day, Mr. Perot made a personal appearance and spent about 45 minutes talking with our students about the rescue of the POWs. The focus of his discussion was “Never leave your men behind.”

Athens has an academic state champion! Congratulations to Blake Rogers who won the state championship for “Prose Interpretation”. This is the second year in a row that Blake has earned the top award at the UIL State meet. Blake is coached by Myrna Bass. Mrs. Bass also received a prestigious award at the academic meet. We are very proud of Blake and Mrs. Bass for representing our district in this “Gold Standard”!
Texas Student achievement Award goes to select Juniors

Texas Student Achievement Award

Eleven Athens High School 11th grade students received the “Texas Student Achievement Award” from the Texas ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN (Pre-ACT) Assessment.  These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation.  ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically-based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshman experience.  Only 17% of Texas PLAN tested students reached that level of proficiency.

The students receiving this recognition from the Texas ACT council are:  Kaylee Whitaker, Bryson Baker, Carlee Rhodes, Thomas Moore, Rafael Juarez, Bryana Bogowitz, Saci-Jean Davila, Stephaine Thomas, Samuel Hernandez, Mattie Griffin, and Evan Pagitt.

The Texas ACT Council is made up of secondary and postsecondary educators who advise ACT, Inc. on the utilization of ACT programs and services in Texas schools and colleges.  The ACT assessment is the college admissions test that is accepted by all colleges nationwide.

According to Karen Pennell, ACT Vice President and Southwest Regional Manager, “The Texas ACT Council recognizes those students who are making significant strides to prepare themselves for college by taking rigorous courses and meeting the PLAN (Pre-ACT) College Readiness Benchmarks.  We also want to recognize that student PLAN (Pre-ACT) achievement is the result of a strong commitment by Athens High School teachers, staff, administration, and parents to increase college readiness for all students.”
