The Hornets white team played an exceptional game, outscoring the Brownsboro Bears in their final football game of the season.  The Hornets offense was ran by quarter back Will Kirkland, who succeeded in placing the ball in the right spot to put points on the board.  Jawuan Martin let the team to victory, scoring all three touchdowns, allowing the Hornets to finish their 8th grade season with a win. Gabe Jackson had a great defensive game.  Overall, the whole team put in a great effort, and should be proud of the victory on their home field.

 

 

 

 

Athens vs Van 10/25/07

 

Athens took two of three from Van Thursday night winning the 8th grade White and the 7th grade Maroon games, before falling in the 8th grade Maroon game.  The 7th grade White team did not play due to Van not having enough players.

Athens fell behind early in the game, with Van taking the early lead 8-0.   Athens came back to cut the lead 8-6 at half on a 10 yard pass from Will Kirkland to Shaun Caplick.  The two point attempt failed. The score stayed 8-6 until late in the fourth quarter, when Shaun Caplick took a reverse 60 yards for the score.   The two point conversion failed.  Athens defense was able to hold Van on their next position to close out the game.  Terrance Behan and Eli Rodriguez both had interceptions.

Athens came out hard and fast to take the lead and never give it up, scoring on the first three possessions of the game.  Anthony Taylor took the first play of the game 50 yards for a touchdown.  The two point attempt failed.  Van fumbled the ball on their next series and the Hornets took it in to score on a Jaylon Johnson run.  George Hutson hit Carter Harraid for the two point conversion, taking the score to 14-0.  Van again fumbled on their next series and Athens pushed the ball in on Anthony Taylor’s run around the outside.  The two point conversion failed.  Van cut into the lead with a run up the middle to cut the score 20-8.  On the issuing kickoff Michael Baker scooped up the ball and raced 70 yards for a touchdown.  George Hutson hit Carter Harraid for the two point conversion.   Van came back to score right before half to cut the lead 28-14.  Athens defense held Van and took their first possession of the second half to score when Anthony Taylor out run Van defenders to the end zone.  Jaylon Johnson scored the two point conversion.  The Hornets gave up one more score before scoring their final touchdown on a run by Jaylon Johnson. The two point conversion failed. The win brought Athens record to 1-2 in district and 2-2-1 overall.

Athens     20/Canton    12

 

Athens came out strong Thursday night beating Canton on their home turf.  Kendall Preston scored on the first drive of the game on a run around the end.  The two point conversion failed.  Athens defense shut down Canton and turned to the passing game for their second score.  Kaleb Husrt hit Zach Basher for a 30 yard pass for touchdown.  The two point conversion failed.  Canton crawled back into the game in the third quarter with their passing game to cut the score to 12-6.  Athens drove down the field with Kaleb Hurst passing to Zach Basher and Alan Pate to get inside the five.  Kendal Preston scored from five yards out to put the Hornets up 18-6 and then turned around and scored the two point conversion to go up 20-6.  Canton scored late in the game to cut the score 20-12.  Athens then ran the clock down.  The offensive line (Arrington Douglas, Nick Plescher, Michael Dailey, Dillon Holcomb, Evan Ward, Dale Grissom) played an exceptional game after being thrown together for the first time on Wednesday.

Defensively, Athens was led by Kendal Preston with two interceptions and the linebacker play of Garrett Trussel, Evan Ward and Danny Garza.  Devon Johnson also added help on the outside.

 

 

Athens 8 vs Bullard

 

B Team Athens 12/Bullard 8

 

Allan Pate and Jawuan Martin lead the way for the Hornets.  Martin scored on a 25 yard run and Pate scored on a 40 yard run.  The two point conversion attempts failed.  Garrett Trussell and Wencesloa Aguilera led the way on defense.  Trussell intercepted a pass and Aguilera recovered a fumble.  James Stoner played a key role on defense, being utilized as a utility player.

For the second straight week, Athens defense held their opponent scoreless, shutting out Bullard 24-0.  Leading the way defensively were Cody Rameriz, Zach Spencer, Jonathon Castaneda and Devin Johnson.  Johnson intercepted a pass and Kendal Preston had a fumble recovery.

 

Putting points on the board for Athens were Caveron Brown with a 20 yard and a 40 yard touchdown run.  Zach Spencer scored on a 30 yard pass from Kaleb Hurst.  Rounding out the scoring was Kendal Preston on a 30 yard pass from Kaleb Hurst.

 

These three guys may have put the points on the board, but leading their way were Michael Daley, Cameron Bailey, Dale Grissom, Evan Ward and Geovonni Castaneda on the offensive line.

Athens 1st score came from Jamie Hatton's 45 yard run around the outside.  DJ Bolton scored the two point conversion on a pass from Keelan Lawyer.  The 2nd touchdown came on a 50 yard reverse by DJ Bolton.  The two point conversion was scored by Taylor Johnson on a pass from Scottie Withers.   Keelan Lawyer, Jessie Durham, Afredo Vasquez, Bo Jackson and Luis Campa all played a great defensive game.

Athens took a hard loss Tuesday night.   The game ended with Athens on the 15 yard line and driving for the chance to tie the game.   Anthony Taylor scored twice on long runs for AthensJaylon Johnson scored a two point conversion.  Carlos Martinez and Brett Allen had a great game on defensive.

Athens fell behind early, but fought back and never lost the lead.  Alan Pate scored two touchdowns for the Hornets.  Quarterback Jonathon Stovall scored on a busted play up the middle.  Garrett Trussel added a two point conversion.  The linebackers (Garrett Trussel, Will Kirkland, Corey Stuckey and Cody Hillhouse) had a stellar game.

Athens pulled out the win with 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter on a quarterback sneak up the middle by Kaleb Hurst.  Caveron Brown tacked on the two point conversion.   Zach Spencer took a pass from Kaleb Hurst to the one yard line to set up the score.  Defensively Athens played well in the second half to hold Van out of the end zone.  Kendall Preston recovered a key fumble late game.  The offense line (Dale Grissom, Cameron Bailey, Michael Dailey, Jose Gueverra, Cody Rameriz, Geovonni Castaneda and Evan Ward) blocked great all night.

Jaylon Johnson scored all three touchdowns for Athens on long runs.  He also scored a two point conversion.  The offense line had a great game.  Keelan Lawyer played great at defensive linebacker.

 

Athens 7A Team Athens 8/Kaufman 8

 

Athens fought hard for the tie with Kaufman.  Erick Garcia scored on a 15 yard touchdown run.  Anthony Taylor scored the two point conversion.  The offensive line (Clint Sharp, Robby Bandy, Cody Jones, Aberto Rios, Alex Wilcher) opened some big holes for the running backs.  Michael Baker, Cole Maloy and Shane Richmon played great a defensive game.  George Hutson made a key interception for the defense.
