Athens ISD schools receive Title I funds to support school-wide improvement. The purpose of Title I, Part A is to ensure that all children, particularly low-achieving children in the highest poverty schools, have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education, and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.” [Public Law 107-110, Section 1001]
Title I, Part A, the largest program area of No Child Left Behind, provides supplemental resources from federal funds to districts and charter schools. Its goal is to help schools with high concentrations of students from low-income families provide high-quality education which will enable all children to meet state student performance standards.
Four areas of focus for NCLB and of Title I:
- accountability for student achievement
- focus on what works
- flexibility
- parental involvement
