Something fishy is happening around town — and it’s a very good thing. An estimated 1,000 people are expected to gather outside Athens High School this Saturday and Sunday for the official weigh-in to the Texas High School Bass Association State Championship Tournament.

The duo of AHS sophomores Caleb Bomer and Reed Allen are among the 285 teams to qualify through four regional tournaments to fish in the championship meet May 11 and 12 on Cedar Creek Lake. This marks the fifth consecutive year Athens High School has been represented in the THSBA state tournament.

“This is their first time to qualify, and they had one of their highest finishes as a team this year,” said their team captain and AHS coach Miles Brown. “They’ve worked hard competing this season, and they definitely deserve it.”

Among their best performances of the season, Bomer and Allen finished second out of 196 teams at the Richland Chambers tournament on Oct. 20, 2018, each winning $500 in scholarships as well as two Lew’s fishing rods.

At this weekend’s state tournament, all teams fish both days, and the best total two-day weight wins. Scholarships totalling $80,000 will be awarded, beginning with $15,000 split between the first-place team members, $10,000 for the second-place team, $9,000 for third place and so on, in addition to many trophies and prizes.
