Two members of the Athens High School class of 2020, Klayton House and Davis Young, have been nominated to receive scholarships worth $10,000 a year through the Texas Armed Service Scholarship Program.

Both House and Young participate in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) as members of the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets in College Station. House was nominated for the honor by Dist. 4 State Rep. Keith Bell, and Young was nominated by Dist. 10 State Rep. John Wray. The scholarship program benefits students who have been nominated by the governor, lieutenant governor, a state senator, or a state representative and who plan to participate in an ROTC program at a Texas college.

“It’s a great honor to be nominated for this scholarship as I pursue an education in biomedical engineering,” said House. “I would like to thank my family for their unwavering support and Representative Bell for allowing me this opportunity. I look forward to a life of service and leadership empowered by this occasion.”

“I am really honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Young. “My gratitude to Rep. Wray and his staff for the privilege of being this year's TASSP recipient and to my family for all their support as well. Thank you all.”

In addition to the Texas Armed Service Scholarship, both House and Young also have four-year Army ROTC scholarships, and Young received the Easterwood Scholarship through the Corps of Cadets.

House graduated salutatorian of his class, was a captain for the football team, a two-time regional qualifier for powerlifting and was named First-Team Academic All-State in football. He qualified for state competition in speech and debate his junior year.

Young graduated with a 4.0 GPA, was a member of the debate team and played varsity football. He is working toward an EMT license and looks forward to pursuing a career in the healthcare field of the military.
