Members of the Athens ISD Board of Trustees appointed Kari Wilmeth Monday night to replace outgoing board secretary Renda Garner. Garner resigned from the board due to a change in residence.

“We appreciate the years of service Mrs. Garner has given to the district,” said Superintendent Blake Stiles following the meeting. “She has helped us navigate some key decisions and will be missed.”

Garner, who has two children at Central Athens Elementary and two who graduated from Athens High School, worked in 2015 as a volunteer on behalf of the successful passage of the district’s bond initiative and later ran unopposed for a seat on the board.

The superintendent also praised Garner’s replacement, noting Wilmeth has been an outspoken proponent and longtime volunteer for AISD.

“We’re pleased to welcome someone with her background to serve out the remainder of the term,” said Stiles. “She’ll be an asset.”

“I’ve been a big supporter of AISD for many years and I’m happy to have the opportunity to serve in a new way,” she said.

Wilmeth has two children in the district, a fourth-grader at Bel Air Elementary and a sophomore at AHS. She has been a board member for the Athens Public Education Foundation for four years, serving the last two as vice president of marketing. She also serves on the Bel Air PTO and as a member of the Athens Athletic Booster Club.
