Dear Parents and Guardians,
It is an Excellent Day in Athens ISD!
We have wrapped up a very successful school year in Athens ISD. I want to take time to thank you for your support of learning at home and for the privilege of serving your children and family through our schools. The difference we are making is extremely encouraging.
Thanks to you, the Athens Independent School District is narrowing the achievement gap, meeting and exceeding targets for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), helping more students become fluent in English, surpassing statewide results on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), and increasing involvement in college and college preparatory curricula. Districtwide, all students are increasing their achievement. We are attracting more students to take challenging Advanced Placement high school courses. You may also be pleased to learn that South Athens Elementary and Bel Air Elementary are Distinguished Title 1 Schools, and that preliminary TAKS scores indicate that all of our students in grades K-5 will be attending at least Recognized school campuses next school year. We must continue to build on these successes.
Please be sure that you take the time to read with your children this summer. Research from numerous sources, including the New York State Education Department indicates that children who continue to read during the summer vacation perform better in the fall when school resumes. We have reading lists on our website at www.athensisd.net. Please take advantage of the local library or contact someone on one of our campuses. We will ensure that you have some reading material for your children.
Finally, thank you for sharing your children with us. We are proud to serve you and the future of this community.
