It is an excellent day in Athens ISD!
Most of you are already aware that the bond package that was presented to the community failed to gain voter approval. The results were 763 votes For and 934 votes Against. We had great voter turnout on Election Day and we are blessed in Athens ISD to have a community that is so actively involved in our school district.
As we prepare for next year, and years beyond, we will strive to continue to keep our community informed and seek guidance from them and the education of their children.
The facility needs of our schools have not gone away, but how we approach them will be changing. We will search for alternative ways of funding the immediate needs and develop a long-range funding plan for long-range needs. Some of the funding of the maintenance/facilities projects will be paid for with the suspension of the operations of the separate 6th grade campus. Other projects will have to be paid for by some alternative borrowing/lending methods.
The big projects that we will need to be funding next year include:
- Enlargements of the Bel Air library to keep with TEA standards
- Bel Air drainage issues that are deteriorating the foundation of the buildings on that campus
- 3 portable buildings (6 classrooms) at South Athens Elementary to accommodate growth and program changes
- Portable restroom banks at Athens Intermediate school
- 1 portable building (2 classrooms) at Athens Intermediate
- 1 modular science lab at Athens Intermediate
- 3 portable buildings (6 classrooms) at Athens Middle school to accommodate program changes
- Science labs at Annex for High school
- Redesign maintenance facility behind administration building to accommodate program changes
