Athens Middle School sixth-grader Charlie Horn was all smiles meeting AHS class of '17 grad Maalik Hall. Maalik, who is in town for homecoming, signed this year as a free agent for the New York Jets and is on their injured reserve list. In 2016, he was a unanimous All-District fullback for Athens. As a linebacker for Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Maalik accounted for 23 tackles-for-loss over his final 22 collegiate appearances. In 11 games last fall, he led the team with 77 stops and 8 sacks. #HornetNation

The artificial turf was unrolled over the new Lady Hornets softball field this week. In about a month, the same will be done on the baseball field. “We’re making good progress,” said Barry Choate, executive director of maintenance and operations for AISD. “It’s going to be nice.” The new baseball/softball complex will include additional seating, with each field accommodating up to 1,000 spectators. Work should be completed well in advance of the start of the baseball/softball season in January. #HornetNation

💮 Sophomore Joselyn Trejo-Jimenez and other students in AHS's greenhouse management class created about 20 mums for their classmates as part of homecoming week. The Hornets host Rusk tonight at Bruce Field. Kick-off is at 7:30, though the AHS band will perform at 7 to allow the homecoming court to be presented at halftime. #HornetNation

Central Athens Elementary student London enjoys getting a book from the Book Vending Machine — something all three of our elementary campuses have thanks to grants from the Athens Public Education Foundation and the Texas Trust Credit Union. It's wonderful to have partners! #HornetNation

⭐️ Athens ISD is offering training to foster parents who may represent a student with a disability during the special education process — as well as to community members interested in becoming a surrogate parent in order to represent a student. The special education process is outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA).
⭐️ The training will be offered free of charge on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 11:30am-1pm at the AISD administration building (104 Hawn Street, Athens).
⭐️ A light lunch will be reserved for any individuals who RSVP to Brooke Brock, executive director of special programs, at 903-677-6907 or bbrock@athensisd.net.

⌨️ First-graders at Bel Air Elementary work on their keyboarding skills in the library. Across the district, elementary students use a program called Keyboarding without Tears to learn typing and computer-use skills, beginning with the basics, such as how to "click and drag." Little Hornets learn the importance of computer literacy early! #HornetNation

Do you have a student in band? Be sure and like/follow the Athens Band Booster page. Any AMS or AHS band parent who would like to know more, email bandboostersahs@gmail.com. #POTHband #HornetNation
