A mobile phone with a ban bar across it and the wordsd "new state law"

A new Texas law has been passed that prohibits the use of personal communication devices by students during the school day at every campus. The law applies to all public schools statewide and will take effect for Hornets beginning the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 4.

This is not a district policy enacted by the AISD Board of Trustees but rather a legal requirement adopted by the Texas Legislature. The new law aims to reduce distractions during instructional time and promote greater student engagement.

Under the law, students at every grade level are prohibited from using their own personal communication devices, such as cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices and similar technology. All personal devices belonging to students must be powered off (not in silent mode) and stored in a backpack or locked vehicle for the entire school day. Devices may not be carried on the student, including in a pocket. This applies to time spent in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias and during passing periods.

Athens High School has operated under a similar expectation for the past few years through its use of Yondr phone pouches, which have helped reduce distractions and increase classroom focus. That experience, though not perfect, does give the district a valuable foundation as this new law impacts all campuses.

AISD appreciates the support of its families in helping students adjust to this change. As always, our goal is to provide the best possible learning environment for every student.
