Athens High School seniors Matalie Ortega (pictured left) and Starlette Johnson are heading to the nation’s capital to represent Athens High School as SkillsUSA District 5 officers. The school board approved out-of-state travel for the duo, along with their advisors, to attend the SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Institute conference in September, where students from across the country will have an opportunity to advocate for the skilled trades and receive advanced leadership training. Matalie serves as a District 5 reporter, and Starlette as a District 5 chaplain.
“I’m excited for the girls; this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Advisor Maria Cerrillo. “They are true leaders, not just for our school, but for our region. We’re super proud of them.”
SkillsUSA is an organization serving students enrolled in training programs for trade, technical, and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
